Alternative Orthodontic Options: Many Adults Opt for Invisalign®

Have you always wanted to correct the position of your teeth but shied away from traditional metal braces? There are more and more adults who are signing on for straighter teeth with alternative orthodontic options. Aesthetics plays an important role in their quality of life. Adults don’t want their mouths full of metal. They want to be able to go to work and visit with family and friends without noticeable dental work. Achieving a beautiful smile can boost a patient’s confidence with the alternative orthodontic treatment from Invisalign® Preferred Providers.

Orthodontic options:

  • Traditional braces provide a mouth filled with metal which is often associated with teenage years. Once all of a child’s baby teeth are gone and new ones have grown in, orthodontic options are more readily attainable. Most insurance companies won’t cover braces until the final teeth are set (excluding 18 year molars). Traditional braces are the least expensive treatment with improved aesthetics. The metal covers much less area on teeth and color bands help teenagers express their individuality. Typically, adults avoid the look of metal braces.

  • Ceramic braces work very similarly to metal braces. Instead of metal brackets, ceramic brackets are clear and blend into your smile. Tooth colored wires and clear bands complete the aesthetically pleasing look of ceramic braces. This option is more expensive than the traditional metal brace and brackets can stain easily if not cared for properly. The discomfort of brackets and wires remains.

  • Lingual braces are metal braces that are attached to the inside of your teeth. It isn’t a favored option since they are harder to take care of (clean), they do not help severe problems and they are more difficult to adjust.

  • Invisalign® gets rid of brackets and wires of any kind and instead uses mouth guard type aligners to gently move teeth into their desired position. Because the aligners are removed during eating and brushing, there are no diet limitations or cleaning troubles. Adults do not have to find a separate orthodontist in order to get straight teeth. Invisalign® Preferred Providers are often general dentists who completed special training. Dr. Guss offers in-house Invisalign® services.

    The Invisalign® orthodontic alternative works great on patients who do not have severe alignment troubles. With a series of custom-made clear aligners worn for most of the day, patients will see the improvements with each new aligner. The condition of the patient’s teeth will vary the length of time aligners are used.

    Invisalign® is more often used to treat adults. Not that they wouldn’t work for teenagers, but the aligners are expensive to replace if lost or damaged. Parent discretion plays a factor in teenage use.
